Family Portraits

Vincent created this watercolor painting of his mother in 1968 - Michalina was 75 at the time.
 

The artist created this self-portrait in 1949 at the age of 30.  It is the last of four such portraits he created - two in 1940 at the age of 21, and two more nine years later (see "Self-portrait Pairs").  But as we have seen, Vincent's alter egos are personified everywhere in his art.

Vincent panited this portrait of his niece Christine in 1968 when she was 19 years old.

Vincent Theodore Smarkusz - another self-portrait in oils - created shortly after returning home from WWII.

After returning home from WWII, Vincent created this lithographic print of his mother Michalina - rendered with great appreciation and love.  He was most grateful to be reunited with her again in their warm kitchen at home in Little Poland, CT.

Vincent's oldest brother and father to Christine.  Eddie died at age 41 while playing golf on a beautiful summer day in 1956.
