In the 1950s, Smarkusz created abstract figurative art we call "Fusionism" - increasing in abstraction over seven years.  He often used Surrealist automatism techniques to guide his media as he actualized the images.  The artist often simply referred to the subject matter in his imagery as just "dreams and nightmares".
