Here is an inside view of how the artist assembled the subjects in his scenes by first creating individual figures, and then positioning them into groups on the surface to be painted. This is one of the processes Vincent employed to create fantasized scenes out of actual images procured from photographs and real life studies. The technique is largely responsible for creating a mildly surreal effect of 'individuals contrasted within their group'. The natural and familiar takes on a slightly unnatural and disconnected floating sensation.
