Vincent Smarkusz passed into the afterlife on October 4th, 1974 during the full Harvest Moon. There was a second full moon on the 31st of that month called a Halloween Blue Moon - which also doubled as the full Hunter's Moon. It is a well-known ancient myth that souls at death are spirited away during full moons, and knowing the artist's appreciation of matriarchal mythology and symbolism, we would be correct to assume that it pleased him greatly to be escorted by Greek Goddesses of the Harvest and of the Hunt!
It is also Polish custom to light candles on the graves of loved ones for Zaduszki, which is the main holiday commemorating the dead for Polish Catholics. The observance begins on the day after Halloween called All Saints' Day (November 1), which is viewed as the Eve of the main Commemoration Day called All Souls' Day, or the Day of the Dead (November 2). Most of the folk customs and rituals take place on All Souls Day, which is the third and final day of the three day Catholic Hallowmas triduum of prayers for the dead (All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day)
The cemeteries glow with thousands of candles, presenting a unique and picturesque scene.
